Brisbane Lightning Women have announced the re-signing of Matt Meyer as head coach for the 2026/27 Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL) season.
The 2026/27 season will be Meyer’s fourth consecutive year behind the bench for Brisbane, following his appointment in August 2023.
Under Meyer, the Lightning have finished second and fourth in the past two seasons, both times advancing to the gold medal game.
Meyer Returns for Fourth Season
Meyer’s extension comes after the Lightning secured back-to-back silver medals in the AWIHL, becoming one of the league’s most established contenders.
Furthermore, Meyer has a proven track record in the AWIHL, and a coaching style that has delivered sustained success.
It will be a campaign of continued building for the Lighting under Meyer, as they seek that final step towards a championship crown.
Since taking charge, Meyer has helped guide the Lightning to a winning record of just under fifty percent, with the team regularly performing in the finals.
The appointment of Meyer continues the same voice and vision which has proven successful at AWIHL level.
Now that Meyer is locked into another year at the helm, Brisbane can shift their focus towards the season, shaping the playing roster and building on the progress over the past three seasons.
Lightning Looking to Go One Better
Despite not reaching the ultimate glory in the AWIHL, consecutive silver medals under Meyer is a clear indicator that the Canadian born head coach can get the best out of the playing group.
Meyer and his squad will now be looking to turn those silver medals into a Joan McKowen Trophy win.
A coaching style that nurtures young talent and harnesses veteran experience, Meyer provides strong stability, leadership and development. Which the Lightning will hope can deliver the club’s first AWIHL championship.

2026/27 Season Opener
The Lightning will start their fourth season under Meyer on home ice, as they welcome a passionate and vocal crowd.
However, Brisbane will face an Adelaide Rush team who missed finals in 2026 and who will be hungry to return to post season action.
Brisbane Lightning will start their season at home on November 7 against Adelaide Rush at Boondall Ice World.
